Nesting 2010

woodland_box_great_tit1This year we have three nest boxes with cameras inside and each are located in different areas around the school site: two are based in the woodland and the other is behind the CLC Reception. The two woodland nest boxes were successful in attracting birds to nest but unfortunately the CLC nest box did not attract any birds this year.

The first woodland nest box was abandoned before the eggs were hatched. Birds may abandon their nests if they feel that their nesting site is at risk from predators or disturbed by humans. The amount of energy that goes into looking after a brood is high and many birds will not waste that energy on a nest that is at risk. Instead they will move on and nest elsewhere.

The second woodland nest box was very successful with 6 fledgling Great Tit chicks. Great Tit chicks will typically fledge after 2 weeks in the nest. Most bird species tend to build a new nest each year, although some species will refurbish old nests. To find out more about Great Tits you can visit the RSPB website.
